Digging in the Dirt
A Peter Gabriel song called Digging in the Dirt is a favorite of mine. I loved how it was upbeat, yet compassionate, reflective and thoughtful: “I’m digging in the dirt to find the places I got hurt. To open up the places I got hurt.” Throughout all of the years I journaled, wrote, and taught writing, nothing has opened me up more than working with the soil.
Now consider soil as a metaphor for the web of life we live in, under the canopy of the trees. How do we relate to the Earth? To each other? There are thoughts worth exploring in public, and it has become educational for me to research some of these questions and more. I look forward to sharing those thoughts here, and I hope the reader finds benefit, or at least some catharsis in joining in this mindful exploration.
