Sunken Shady Garden

Location e.g. Lakewood, Colorado

It was a square peg in a round-ish hole. So 10 tons of a concrete fountain had to go!

The new owners wanted something softer, greener, and more welcoming. This Santa Fe “sunken courtyard” had been a gathering place in the 50’s and 60’s, but was ready for an update. There was very little life, save a few shrubs, vines and a rather stately elm tree. The new fountain, gardens, and pathways created a cosier, room-like feel to the large space.

When we met this garden it was a sea of gravel with a non-functioning fountain in the middle. The elm tree at the back of the sunken courtyard was a beautiful sentinal at the south, providing dappled shade most days.
Hardscaping is in, old flagstone is cleaned up, and plants can now meet their new home!
