Rain Gardens

New Mexico….and Everywhere!

On almost every property, there is a rain garden waiting to happen. In New Mexico where water is scarce and sun is readily available, all stormwater becomes a valuable resource. Landscapes should be oriented more toward nature, and less toward consumption.

Clay soil is hydrophobic.

It’s not scared of water, it just doesn’t absorb water quickly like sandy soils, it just runs off, unless you are intentional about holding and using that water. Where one sees pooling after a storm, one has an opportunity! Creating a sponge-like soil out of clay dominant soil means bringing in plenty of organic material to break down and latch on to the soil. The result is an incredible environment for growing just about anything!

In the photo to the right, this front yard “river” had so much water it supported two fruit trees!
